On March 18, 2024, in honor of Global Recycling Day, we celebrated a major success in our collaboration with OMV and presented our employees with packages of our all-season fertilizer to test.
Since September 2023, we have been working in close partnership with OMV to develop an innovative solution for the sustainable use of coffee grounds. Our joint efforts have led to the creation of BeanSaver® All-Season Fertilizer, a product that not only promotes the circular economy but also utilizes coffee grounds as a valuable resource and protects them from landfill.
By collecting coffee grounds at OMV headquarters and at selected VIVA shops at OMV gas stations, we have already been able to produce one ton of this valuable fertilizer. This success demonstrates how creative and sustainable approaches can lead to the development of significant circular economy products.
The market launch of BeanSaver® all-season fertilizer in the VIVA Shops at OMV filling stations starting in April 2024 is a milestone that demonstrates the fruits of our collaboration and commitment to a more sustainable future. We are proud to be part of the #RecyclingHeroes initiative and look forward to developing further innovative solutions for a greener future together with OMV and all stakeholders.

Our project with café+co gained momentum with the start of our cooperation last year. Coffee grounds, which were once a waste product in coffee machines, are now finding their way back into the natural cycle as a valuable resource thanks to us.
Our pilot project, which is already running successfully with selected café+co customers and in their head office, is a shining example of how innovative concepts can transform waste into valuable end products such as plant fertiliser. This reduction in waste, coupled with the sensible use of natural resources, not only makes a decisive contribution to the circular economy, but also protects and honours our environment.
The aim of our involvement with café+co is clear: we want to emphasise the importance of our partnership, which together has the potential to transform the industry and become a role model for others. By working hand in hand, we are demonstrating that the path to a more sustainable future is paved through joint efforts and innovative ideas.

It’s a big step for BeanSaver® and an even bigger step for the circular economy: we are proud to announce that our commitment to turning coffee grounds into a valuable resource has been recognised. Through the ‘aws Sustainable Food Systems – explore’ grant, we have received essential support that enables us to realise our vision.
Our mission at BeanSaver®, is to redefine coffee grounds – otherwise seen as waste – and recognise them for what they really are: a valuable raw material.
The aws funding is a confirmation of our conviction that the circular economy and sustainability are not only necessary answers to environmental issues, but can also be a source of innovation and local economic development. With the support, we can realise collection pilots for coffee grounds and advance the prototyping of various products (e.g. fertilisers, heating briquettes, barbecue charcoal,…), which is a key element in promoting a green economy.
This funding success with aws is a crucial step to position BeanSaver® as a key player in the circular economy and to continuously improve our products with the feedback of our customers. Together with aws, we are looking forward to a future in which coffee grounds are no longer seen as waste, but as a treasure. We are convinced that this is the way forward.
