In honor of Global Recycling Day on March 18, 2024, we celebrated a major success in our collaboration with OMV and presented employees with samples of our all-season fertilizer to test.
Since September 2023, we have been working in close partnership with OMV to develop an innovative solution for the further use of coffee grounds. Our joint efforts have led to the creation of the BeanSaver® year-round fertilizer, a product that not only promotes the circular economy but also utilizes coffee grounds as a valuable resource and prevents them from ending up in landfills.
By collecting coffee grounds at OMV’s headquarters and at select VIVA Shops at OMV gas stations, we have already been able to produce one metric ton of this valuable fertilizer. This success demonstrates how collected coffee grounds can be used to develop new circular economy products.
The market launch of the BeanSaver® year-round fertilizer in the VIVA Shops at OMV gas stations starting in April 2024 is a milestone that showcases the fruits of our collaboration and our commitment to the reuse of coffee grounds. We are proud to be part of the #RecyclingHeroes initiative and look forward to developing further innovative applications for coffee grounds together with OMV and all stakeholders.

With the start of our partnership last year, our project with café+co has really taken off. Coffee grounds, which were once a waste product in coffee machines, are now finding their way back into nature’s cycle as a valuable resource, thanks to us.
Our pilot project, which is already running successfully at select café+co locations and at their headquarters, is a shining example of how innovative concepts can transform waste into valuable end products such as plant fertilizer. This involves collecting coffee grounds after they’ve been used in coffee machines and using them as raw material for new products.
The goal of our collaboration with café+co is clear: We want to highlight the significance of our partnership, which together has the potential to transform the industry and set an example for others. By working hand in hand, we demonstrate that new circular systems for coffee grounds can only be established through collaboration along the value chain.

This is a big step for BeanSaver® and an even bigger step for the circular economy: We are proud to announce that our commitment to transforming coffee grounds into a valuable resource has been recognized. Through the “aws Sustainable Food Systems – explore” grant, we have received essential support that enables us to turn our vision into reality.
Our mission at BeanSaver® is to redefine coffee grounds—which are otherwise viewed as waste—and recognize them for what they truly are: a valuable raw material.
The aws grant reaffirms our belief that the circular economy and sustainability are not only necessary solutions to environmental challenges but can also be a source of innovation and local economic development. With this support, we can launch pilot collection programs for coffee grounds and advance the prototyping of various products (e.g., fertilizer, heating briquettes, charcoal, etc.), thereby developing and testing different material applications for coffee grounds.
This funding success with aws is a crucial step toward positioning BeanSaver® as a key player in the circular economy and continuously improving our products based on feedback from our customers. Together with aws, we look forward to a future in which coffee grounds are no longer viewed as waste, but as a treasure. We are convinced that this will enable the development of new circular cycles for biogenic secondary raw materials, and we look forward to continuing on this path.
