Coffee grounds and sale of the all-season fertiliser made from them in the Viva Shops
OMV is moving from the value chain to the value cycle and is looking for various opportunities in its integrated energy, fuel and chemicals business to achieve this. Every year, 1500 petrol stations in Central and Eastern Europe produce tonnes of coffee grounds. These coffee grounds do not have to be wasted, but they often end up in landfills and contribute to methane and CO2 pollution.
OMV was looking for intelligent solutions to collect and reuse these coffee grounds in a sustainable way. As part of the OMV Group Sphere Innovation Challenge, we were able to successfully position ourselves as a project partner. We are developing a customised collection and logistics concept for the branch network in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland and are converting the collected coffee grounds into fertiliser pellets, which in turn are offered for sale at petrol stations.
The project is currently in the test phase with customers; in a second step, we want to expand the collection system to Austria and then to other countries. Through our project, we are actively contributing to achieving OMV’s zero waste targets.
Innovative recycling of coffee grounds
As part of a partnership with café+co, we are supporting the goal of transforming coffee grounds from a waste product into a valuable resource. We are helping café+co to build up expertise in the area of the circular economy and to utilise coffee grounds innovatively.
Together with café+co, we are working on collecting coffee grounds, processing them into innovative products, developing a sales structure and scaling up this process within the RWA Group.

Together with the Federal Institute for Agricultural Engineering Wieselburg, we put our prototypes briquettes, heating pellets and barbecue charcoal to the test and gain experience for further development.

We are working with the Austrian competence centre for tribology on interesting applications such as lubricants and oils (for cosmetics, the food industry, etc.).

Together with the FH Wiener Neustadt, we are active in the Creative Pre-Incubator Programme as part of the Start Up Center and in the international sustainability programme Green Hexagon.
